What is pH and ORP?
You may have heard the word “pH” used to describe drinking water quality, but do you know what it means?
pH is the measurement of electrically charged particles in a substance. It tells how acidic or alkaline (basic) the substance is. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14: specifically, acidic water has a pH lower than 7. The most acidic substances have a pH of 0 (Battery acid belongs to this type), Alkaline water has a pH of 8 or higher. The most alkaline substances, such as lye, have a pH of 14. Pure water has a pH of 7 and is considered “neutral” because it is neither acidic nor basic.

ORP stands for Oxidation-Reduction Potential of water. It is also known as oxidation-reduction potential. This means that ORP is a measure to check whether water has a higher oxidation or reduction potential. ORP or oxidation-reduction potential of water is tested using an ORP meter or oxidation-reduction meter. An ORP meter basically checks for the gain or loss of oxygen in water. Let us discuss how an ORP meter works and the ORP value.
ORP is a measurement of a solution’s ability to transfer electrons (oxidize or reduce), expressed in millivolts. ORP reflects the fact that in a chemical reaction, the reduction reaction and the oxidation reaction are complementary; one cannot occur without the other. If one undergoes oxidation (loses electrons), the other must accept those electrons and is said to be reduced (gains electrons).
What is pH controller?
The pH meter and controller is a tool used to check the alkalinity and acidity of the solution. The measurement results will be displayed immediately on the LCD screen of the machine. Based on the pH measurement results, you can make appropriate adjustments for the water and soil environment used in daily life and industrial plants. The pH meter is used with pH electrodes and standard buffer solutions.

Operating principle of pH meter and controller:
The operating principle of the pH meter is quite simple. This device gives a value for acid or base concentration, making measurements through the concentration of hydrogen ions. If the Hydrogen ion has a positive charge, its acidity is higher and vice versa.
What Does ORP Mean
A simple definition of ORP is the ability of a solution to transfer electrons, known as oxidation or reduction, measured in millivolts. An ORP measurement is a reading of the potential difference between a measuring electrode and a reference electrode. Depending on the solution being measured, ORP electrodes will act as either electron donors or electron acceptors.
ORP is similar to pH in that pH indicates how acidic or basic a solution is based on the activity of hydrogen ions in the solution, and ORP indicates the oxidation-reduction state of a solution based on the overall activity of electrons in the solution.
The figure below is a portion of a typical ORP scale. The full range is typically 1500 mV to -1500 mV. Just like with pH, all ORP electrodes are designed to produce 0 mV at pH 7. When we look at the pH scale, an acid is defined as a substance capable of releasing hydrogen ions and a base is a substance capable of absorbing hydrogen ions.

Therefore, every acid has its complementary base. When you look at the pH scale at 0 mV, the solution is neutral (it is neither acidic nor alkaline), but as you move above 0 mV, the solution is considered acidic, and as you move below 0 mV, the solution is considered alkaline or basic. Some common liquids and their corresponding ORP values are shown in the figure above.
Soda (Sprite) is known to have a pH value of around 2; shown here the corresponding ORP value for soda is around 400 mV (nearly 500mV). It is shown that a positive mV reading (or below pH 7) is associated with the charge of the Hydrogen ion H+ and the solution is said to be acidic. When a negative mV (or pH higher than 7) is associated with the charge of the Hydroxyl ion OH-, the solution is said to be alkaline or basic.
Unlike pH, the ORP value is affected by all oxidizing and reducing agents, not just acids and bases that only affect the pH measurement. Since ORP is a direct measurement of electrons transferred in Oxidation-Reduction reactions, in oxidizing conditions, the measuring probe will lose electrons to the solution, which creates a positive potential; in a reducing environment, electrons are donated to the probe, creating a negative potential. Since the reducing agent has the ability to accept electrons and the oxidizing agent has the ability to lose electrons; it can be said that the stronger the reducing agent, the more negative the ORP value, and the stronger the oxidizing agent, the more positive the ORP value.
Let’s take a few specific examples for easy understanding. For example:
Permanganate acid solution is a strong oxidizing agent: it strongly attracts electrons from the REDOX electrode, so the REDOX potential is very positive.
In contrast, Sulfite solutions are strong reducing agents. It pushes electrons into the electrode, so the REDOX potential is negative.

Application of pH meter and controller:
The rate and outcome of chemical reactions often depend on the pH of the environment. Therefore, knowing how to accurately measure pH is very useful in many situations:
- Used for analysis in chemical laboratories.
- Soil pH meter is used to measure agricultural soil pH. Thereby, allowing farmers to improve soil to suit each type of crop to improve productivity, fruit quality and longevity of the garden.
- The water pH meter is used to check and adjust water sources for drinking water, domestic water, swimming pool water, wastewater, aquaculture – seafood and aquatic environments. Assess the risk of metals that can dissolve in water sources such as lead, cadmium, copper, iron, zinc, etc. in water containers and pipes.
Advances in engineering science and manufacturing technology have resulted in more sophisticated pH meters capable of:
- Measure pH directly inside living cells
- Measuring pH of semi-solid substances such as food for food production, beer and wine brewing, etc.
- Used to test food, research food production, and brew beer and wine
- Used to check whether water destroys boilers, chemical reactions in chemical plants, maintains pH of plating solutions, etc.
