Glass filter media
Glass sand is a kind of filter material that can be used as a direct replacement for quartz sand or zeolite. Commonly known as artificial glass filter material, 100% recycled glass, it has environmental and sanitary advantages compared with traditional silica/sand filter material.
Glass sand has two types: coarse and fine. Coarse glass sand should be placed at the bottom of the filter to ensure no clogging (replacing supporting gravel), while adding fine glass sand on top to allow water to circulate through the filter tank for maximum efficiency.
This product category applies to common glass sand for water filtration such as: 0.5-1.0mm, 1-3mm, 3-6mm,
What is quartz sand used for water filtration?
Water filter sand (quartz sand) is one of the popular water filtration materials today. This material has the effect of filtering and preventing small suspended elements that cannot naturally precipitate in the water source. It is often used as a filter material along with other materials in the filtration process: activated carbon, anthracite coal or manganese sand.

Advantages of glass filter sand
- Reduced backwash time. Water savings up to 50%, compared to traditional silica sand filter media
- Longer service life, up to 15 years. While conventional silica sand has a service life of 3 to 5 years.
- No need to backwash when adding new filter media
- Increased filtration rate with the same pressure difference as quartz sand
- More effective than sand because it removes more debris, sediment
- Improves water clarity
- Reduces bacterial growth (Biofilm) through negatively charged surface area, increasing service life.
- Environmentally friendly, glass filter media is 100% recyclable.
- Non-toxic: Chemically inert, glass beads do not leak harmful substances into the water, ensuring safe and clean wastewater.
- Filter down to +/- 5 microns (with Grade 0)
- The beads do not clump together, allowing easier flow without resistance.
- The high active surface area amplifies the catalytic reaction, generating free radicals to prevent biofouling on the material surface.
Working principle of glass sand water filter
- The artificial glass sand filter used as filter material has the same working principle as the common quartz sand filter. When the water flows through, the blocking effect of the uniform glass beads and the electrostatic adsorption generated by it can treat the impurities in the water and form clear water after filtration.
- Glass bead filter can save a lot of water for backwashing. The smooth surface can also effectively adhere to pollutants and bacteria, reduce biofouling, and biofilm is not easy to adhere to the surface. The filtration efficiency is outstanding.
Application of glass filter sand
- Used for swimming pools
- Especially for filtration of aquariums and aquaculture
- As well as water treatment applications – for treating a variety of water sources such as groundwater, surface water, sea water and wastewater.
- Effective in removing contaminants from wastewater generated during chemical production.
- Ensures high quality water filtration in food and beverage production, maintaining hygiene and safety standards.
- Provides reliable filtration of wastewater in pharmaceutical production, ensuring compliance with strict regulatory requirements.
- Effective filtration of wastewater from textile production, removing dyes and other contaminants.
